Fire and Survival: How to Light a Campfire in the Wild
Dec 12, 2024
Choose the Right Spot
Pick a flat, safe area away from trees, dry grass, or overhangs. Ensure it's sheltered from wind to prevent spreading.
Gather Materials
Tinder: Dry leaves, grass, pine needles, or bark to start the fire.
Kindling: Small, dry sticks to help the fire grow.
Fuel Wood: Larger logs to maintain the fire.
Build the Fire Structure
Teepee: Arrange small sticks in a cone shape, leaving space in the middle for airflow.
Log Cabin: Stack small sticks in a square pattern, gradually increasing the size.
Ignite the Fire
Use a lighter, matches, or a firestarter. If none are available, use flint and steel or a bow drill to create friction.
Maintain the Fire
Add more wood gradually to keep the fire burning. Keep the fire under control, especially in windy conditions.
Extinguish Properly
When done, pour water or cover the fire with dirt to ensure it’s completely out, leaving no embers.
A campfire provides warmth, light, and a means to cook food, but always prioritize safety and environmental responsibility.
